Last November speculation was rife that Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra and her Disney actor husband Nick Jonas had called it quits. She dropped his name from her Instagram handle and the world went into meltdown.

Fast forward two months and the star couple have confirmed they are first-time parents to a baby girl via surrogacy. At the time of the break-up rumours, Chopra admitted the reaction to the name change had left her feeling vulnerable and said she had made a conscious decision to keep much of her life private – and it worked!

The couple sure surprised fans with the announcement, and here’s everything you need to know about the biggest Hollywood baby news of the year so far.

The White Tiger actress and her musician husband announced on January 21 that they were “overjoyed” at becoming parents. The couple posted a notice on their Instagram accounts confirming the news at the same time.
They said they had welcomed a baby via surrogate and immediately asked for privacy so they could focus on their family.

Their daughter is 12 weeks premature

TMZ reported the baby was born on Saturday in a Southern California hospital. The couple were spotted near San Diego at a dog beach the day before the little girl was born.

Daily Mail reported the arrival of the baby is very premature with the surrogate giving birth at 27 weeks – 12 weeks ahead of the expected delivery date.

So, why surrogacy?

According to multiple reports the couple decided to opt for a surrogate because their busy work schedules were interrupting their family planning. It reported that the actress does not have fertility issues, but it was difficult for them to plan to be together when she could conceive.

Hindustan Times reported Priyanka opened up about living in London while Nick was at their house in Los Angeles.

She has been in London filming for her Amazon Prime Video show Citadel. In an interview with InStyle Priyanka said Nick would sometimes fly in just for the day or to have dinner with her because time was so limited.

At 39 years old, the actress and her 29-year-old husband decided to hire a surrogate so their dream of a family could come true.

Chopra has made no secret of her desire for a family. Since getting married in 2018 she has been vocal about wanting to be a mum.

She once joked to E! Online’s Daily Pop that she wanted a “cricket team” of children. She later told E! News that “family is a big part of my life. It’s always been a part of my dream”.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Chopra said as her career progressed she had learnt to become more private with her life and that as a public persona she was very vulnerable.

The actress also said the couple wanted a family and “by God’s grace, when it happens, it happens”.

Chopra went on to tell the publication that Nick was on board with her family plans and they were both okay with slowing down to raise their family.
